A New Technique for the Assessment of Intra-operative Femoral Component Rotation in Total Knee Arthroplasty: The Anterior Femoral Cortical Line
نویسندگان
چکیده
Accurate rotation of the femoral component in total knee arthroplasty is important for normal patella tracking, symmetrical patellofemoral joint contact, neutral varus-valgus positioning in flexion, correct rotational alignment of the tibia in extension and the avoidance of anterior femoral notching . Internal rotation of the femoral component causes a shift into valgus alignment with flexion and also an increase in the “quadriceps” (Q) angle with deleterious effects on patella tracking. Internal rotation of the femoral component also causes differences in the flexion and extension gaps by altering the relative dimensions of the posterior condyles in flexion. Flexion then causes asymmetrical tension across the prosthesis and gapping on the lateral side .

The Effect of Sagittal Femoral Bowing on the Femoral Component Position in Total Knee Arthroplasty
Background: In the current study, we investigated that how sagittal femoral bowing can affect the sagittal alignment ofthe femoral component in total knee arthroplasty (TKA).Methods: There were 25 patients underwent TKA. Long leg radiography in lateral view was performed. The sagittalfemoral bowing (SFB) and component alignment in relation to the sagittal mechanical axis and distal anterior cor...
متن کاملAnthropometric Measurements of Distal Femur to Design the Femoral Component of Total Knee Arthroplasty for the Iranian Population
Background: Acquiring knowledge about anatomic and geometric quantities of bones is among the most vitalparameters in orthopedic surgery that has a significant effect on the treatment of various disorders and subsequentoutcomes. The aim of this study was to obtain anthropometric information for distal femur in order to compare withsimilar dimensions of prosthesis used in total...
متن کاملRadiologic Assessment of Distal Femur Cutting Angle in Varus Knee Candidates for Total Knee Arthroplasty
Background: In a total knee arthroplasty surgery the goal is to produce 90 degree angle between the knee articular lobe and the mechanical femoral line. Most orthopedic surgeons usually utilize a 5 to 7 degree for distal femoral cutting angle. In this study we will aim at clearing this question, that whether the” five-seven degree” distal femoral cutting angle supposed to be an equable spectrum...
متن کاملPosterior Cortical Axis: A New Landmark to Control Femoral Component Rotation in Total Knee Arthroplasty.
Rotation errors of the femoral component are held responsible for occurrences such as instability in flexion and midflexion, patellar maltracking, and arthrofibrosis following total knee arthroplasty. However, in many cases, the epicondylar axis cannot be reliably identified due to bone defects or metal artifacts on computed tomography, so alternative landmarks are necessary to evaluate the fem...
متن کاملA computer-assisted, tibia-first technique for improved femoral component rotation in total knee arthroplasty
Background The use of navigation for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) improves limb alignment in the coronal and sagittal planes. However, similar improvements in femoral and tibial component rotation have not yet been realized using currently available systems. Methods We developed a modified navigated TKA technique in which femoral rotation was set using the resected tibial plane as the refere...
